It's hard to believe that a country this exotic, this tropical, this perfect, is just a two-hour plane trip from the U.S. Nestled between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize sits in an ideal spot of the Central America's turquoise Caribbean coast. The only English-speaking country in Central America, Belize is quickly becoming a favorite destination for travelers attracted by its relaxing pace, its hospitable people, its rich culture and history, and its safe traveling experience. Of all Belize's regions, Stann Creek District is widely considered the country's most enchanted. And most culturally rich. Located in Stann Creek District, Sanctuary Belize is just a short jaunt away from the charming coastal town of Dangriga - the district capital as well as the historic home of the Garifuna. A blend of Southern American and African ancestry, the Garifuna are a peaceful people with a unique and well preserved culture. Along with centuries old fishing and farming traditions, the Garifuna have cultivated a vibrant oral tradition that combines language, dance and music. These traditions are still very much alive today, as they are passed down from generation to generation and shared with visitors.

The People

A former British colony, today Belize is a stable and independent nation with a democratic government based on the parliamentary system. With approximately 250,000 people, Belize's population is small but vastly diverse. While English is the official language of Belize, you'll also hear people speaking Spanish, Creole and indigenous languages. Mingling in its cities, villages and towns, you'll find Garifuna, Creole, Mestizo, Mayan, East Indian, Chinese and Mennonite people living together in harmony and enriching the country with a palette of cultures and traditions. But there is one quality shared by all Belizeans: a warmth that welcomes you into their land.

The Climate
The Climate

The Belize climate is close to perfect. With its subtropical location, Belize boasts an average annual temperature havering around 80 degrees. Coastal waters are always warm and inviting, the refreshing ocean breezes tempering the humidity. Here, there are only two seasons - neither of them winter. The dry season typically extends from December to May. The rainy season, usually spanning from June to November, can bring around 200 inches of rain to Southern Belize, quenching its lush jungles and rainforests. The rain falls typically come in short and frequent bursts that have little disruption to everyday life and recreation.
